June 2012
Due to the unfortunate situation with CAD's gallery space in the Kingsgate CAD were no longer in a position to exhibit artists work. It seemed that as the Central Fife Open Studios was fast approaching CAD were no longer going to be able to participate. Then, James and Angela Gourlay of Craigton House emailed various CAD artists if they would like to exhibit at their country house in August. This has worked well and the artists will be exhibiting alongside artists from Bespoke Galleries of Glasgow who have also been invited along to Craigton House. This will be a great month to go along and see the Craigton House of Art for yourself. Their will be plenty of artworks from the many invited artists and also see fine crafts that will be available to buy. James and Angela are opening Craigton as a special event to mark not just the Central Fife Open Studio but in conjunction with the Edinburgh Fringe also. The house will be open every weekend throughout August so mark your diaries....now!

A Woman's Voice in Art
Hi , both Angela Parish (Allan) and Lainy Allison are looking at the first exhibition of a Woman's Voice in Art to be centered around woman and the dreadful affected disease cancer. Ovarian Cancer and Breast Cancer are 2 primarily female affected illnesses. We are looking for artists to create and contribute to the exhibition their amazing art that focuses on this. You can focus on the diagnosis, the treatment, the psychological effects, the devastating aftermath on not just the victim but the family also. There is also the outcome, the survival due to the cures that are out there. We are looking to raise the awareness factor and at the same time also raise money for a great charity that doesn't actually look at investing in the research but provides a service that works towards making women feel better about themselves whilst undergoing treatment. It is shown that women do feel good about themselves if they can look better. This actually goes a long way in raising the effects of the human constitution and helping people cope better with all that they have to deal with. Looking better can make you feel just a little stronger. So, ladies. If you are keen to work with us on this amazing exhibition, please contact us here. This exhibition will be proof that woman all around understand the importance of being a woman and just what it takes to be able to cope, feel confident and want to live and fight to live just that bit better.

February Arrives
And with it also arrives Holly Blue Archibald. Holly has been welcomed to CAD along with her deviant style illustrations. They are absolutely amazing!!! stroke Gorgeous in fact!! In the gallery Angela Parish (Allan) had been busy working on a project. She has been asked to undertake the making of a large owl head complete with claws for a film being made in Scotland. It has been great watching the manifestation taking place. Meanwhile the Fife Portrait Exhibition will be upon us and invite everyone along to see works of many great artists and photographers from around Scotland. The ArtYArd is open for those parents wishing to come along either by themselves or bring the younger ones along to sit and sketch or paint. It is a great way of stepping out of the manic shopways full of carrier bags and noise. Meet the artists and have a chat...
January News
The New Year has started settling in nicely.. unlike last year when we were all snowed in..some of us enjoyed the beauty of it and used every opportunity to take photographs while some ...didn't.
The Peace Exhibtion in November went very well. All thanks to Mr and Mrs Doig for allowing the final works of their late son to be exhibited with us. An emotional exhibition highlighting many issues that the world suffers all because of human errors and issues.
The next exhibition planned is a 'Portrait Exhibition". CAD are welcoming artists who may be interested in exhibiting in this.
If you are interested please email mailto:[email protected]
CAD this month welcomes a new artist Fergus. Fergus sculpts using discarded materials. From industrial waste to beach-combed items, his often totemic works are redolent of Pictish stones with Spanish colour. He seeks beauty in decay and restores the components, knowing it is only a delaying process as time adds its own input.
James Annandale one of CADs prolific artists has been poorly so we all wish him a speedy recovery and to return asap to make the tea x x
Back in February last year we posted news of 2 little boys that visit CAD to be messy in the artyard, young Pieter and Kael. Well, CAD want to wish them all the very best as they head off to a new life in Australia. They are 2 amazing laddies who CAD have loved having them visit. Also a BIG thank you to mum for bring them to the yard. Their mum is someone who gives up time in order for Pieter and Kael to have some 'their time'. All the very best to you all ... Love from all of us .

November
Art4Peace (The Missing Peace) Exhibition.
Starting on November 11th (Armistice Day, cessation of hostilities WW1) through to December 11th 2011. (This day in 1946, prompted by the devastation of WW2, The United Nations Children Fund was created, a service to provide food and healthcare to children devastated by war).
A tribute to the late artist Douglas Doig and his plea for a better world. Douglas's work is created from the ashes of most if not all his previous artwork. Artwork that he burnt prior to creating the work on display. His art reflects his fear, his aversion to unrest historically. Each piece is thought-provoking and has layers of meanings. Most importantly each piece is a tribute or, a consequential, indicative piece of art. Amongst the many artists exhibiting is Carla Arouesty Mouniz from Mexico and work by exiled artist Shikyba Azizi. At 25 Shikyba escaped Afghanistan with her brothers and sisters, leaving her mother and the rest of her family behind. “life was anger, destruction and death,” she says hesitantly. “Every time you went out you see dead people lying on the floor, men, women and children. “In war, all people are victims.” Shikyba, like other exiled artists and their work, draws on the political and personal struggles of their lives.
CAD will also be showing a small exhibition of work by children from the Palestinian Occupied Territories and Israel called 'Dreaming Peace'. CAD have loosely used the word 'PEACE' for this exhibition. What it is implying to the visitors is that from the artists own thoughts and chaotic lives, 'Peace' is at the heart of all artistic thought process. The artists are exhibiting their fears and experiences in search of 'armistice' . This exhibition is also an awareness project offering information from just a few of the many important organisations that work behind our scenes to make this planet a better place. Working to give even the intrinsic of Human Rights to those in desperate need i.e food, water, healthcare and shelter. We all complain of the most unimportant things, the clothes, the shoes and handbags, the standard of food, when, not too far away there are people starving to death, no footwear and certainly with no choices, just the basic, fundamental needs. CAD are hoping that when you come to their exhibition, you will leave with something to think about.
The Peace Exhibition will be open from Tuesday to Sunday each week 11:00 am – 4:30 pm.
Also new this week to CAD is artist Ralph Taylor who brings his own vibrant style of art to the walls of the gallery. Come along and see his work or visit his website by clicking on his image on the 'Artists' page.
JAMES ANNANDALE....WE await the unveiling :-) Its like watching the clock tick :-)

Gill Low
Gill Low has just spent the night with Bob Dylan or rather in the presence of Bob at his concert in Braehead, Glasgow. Wearing something that all of us want, a smile, she came into the gallery to tell us all about it, leaving a few us :-( green with envy. Gill has been painting the singers portrait for a number of years and they are hanging on walls globally. You can see more of Gill's work at http://orrville.weebly.com/
ART4PEACE EXHIBITION NOVEMBER 11th - December 11th 2011
'Art4TheMissingPeace' Exhibition coming soon to CAD (Contemporary Arts Dunfermline). Artists out there are invited to create a piece work of art expressing your vision of global peace to show. If you are interested in this event then please contact us via email... [email protected] or via the contact page on this website or, alternatively via [email protected]
Art4Peace (or TheMissingPeace) We see this project as a unique opportunity to explore the idea of art as an interpretation of, and a catalyst for, peace. Through the artist's work, we also hope to broaden appreciation of the idea of what peace can bring about in our lives. The project and exhibition title is an evocative play on words - peace will always be elusive, or missing, in our world, but projects such as this shows that dedicating oneself to peace for however long is anything but pointless. The word 'create' is used very loosely. Artists are given the freedom to explore their full life and existence so each 'creation' will be the result of personal interpretation.
In Cad this month we also welcome 2 special visitors Tiffany and Poppy who both have come on board with CAD for work experience. Both girls are working on a very special project. Making giant 'Peace Doves' that will be used to mark and support International Peace Day. The United Nations' (UN) International Day of Peace is celebrated on September 21 each year to recognise the efforts of those who have worked hard to end conflict and promote peace. The International Day of Peace is also a day of ceasefire – personal or political. The Dove is a symbols associated with the day of peace. So come along and see their progress and see the birds 'take flight' ..

Simon Faulkner-Griffan also amazed the audience with a monologue style reading of his own. All these men enjoyed the chance of performing at 'The Fringe' 2011.. Well done to them and many thanks to Mary and Lainy for providing the artwork on the stage, despite the car park fees.... :-) Great fun was had by all.
while we are here, CAD would like to welcome a new member to the team, Michelle Carter. Michelle is a superb welcoming person and will bring to CAD her great personality. As our new Secretary Michelle will a great asset to the organisation.

July already.....
July has been a busy month in the Kingsgate. Many students have come along and taken advantage of the Art Yard that CAD provides. Simon has become a mentor to many and they continue to come back time and time again. Nina Clancy has once again boarded the train to join the force to help out with children's side, leaving with glue in her hair and paint on her bum, but she is a star. Other artists have been busy exhibiting, Gill Low has five works handed into Glenrothes annual art exhibition which opens to the public on saturday 6th August. Lainy Allison was invited to hang her work at Hopetoun House along with Mary Johnston. It was also sought that Angela Allan CAD's newest member should take her portfolio along to. Also exhibiting was Tom Bishop deMain one of CADs original founders. It was great to catch up with Tom and introduce him to Angela and Simon.
Lainy has met up with dancer Susan McDonald from the FlyRight Dance Company and it looks as though a Dance Day will come to Dunfermline. So watch this space for more details.
CAD will continue to provide an ArtWing in Dunfermline as long as it is possible. It is a great space and many visitors to the unit always leave with a positive attitude about CADs mission. If you are interested in becoming a member or would like to contribute in anyway to CAD then please email us mailto:[email protected] or, use the contact form on our website.

EASTER EVENT
A great event was had at the Glen Gates on Saturday (23rd April). CAD organised an amazing Easter Bonnet making for children and even though the rain came there was quite a few hundred children turning up to get creative. It was highly successful and there was a winner in the Easter Bonnet Competition later on in the day by a little girl who had come to see us (pic to come). Thanks to everyone who hlped, Mary, Gordon, Simon, Nina, Angela, Scott and a few more)
In the CAD Unit (Kingsgate) There has been vegetable planting and a special thanks to the PoundStore for donating a couple of hundred units of seeds for the children.. Fingers crossed there will be some wonderful tasting tomatoes, sweetcorn, spring onions and lettuce growing in the homes of Fife and beyond. It is a wonderful exercise teaching children the value of food and what it takes to grow and eat their own produce. Children can learn to enjoy fresh fruits and vegetables growing in their own homes and gardens and will also 'remember' such projects for years to come. There are still some seeds left so come along all you parents and guardians and pick up a free 'green finger' project for the kiddies..

Brothers Pieter and Kael from Dunfermline came in to visit us which was a nice surprise. Brought in by mum they soon made themselves at home and entertained us with Kael's (pictured below) songs of 'Mince n Tatties (one to book for gigs in the future) and also their creative skills. Pieter aged 9 proved to be extremely dextrous in his hand skills. He had complete control of the pen when setting out the landscape of his drawing. I think Pieter (pictured below) could be tomorrows future artist and he should be proud.
We have also had the pleasure of meeting Stephen Penny through our doors. Stephen produces from waste copper wiring some pretty amazing trees (see below). Very unusual and very heavy these trees are made by binding, twisting and winding wiring that was once used in industry and has had to be replaced. Stephen is currently working on a tree that could be as high as ten feet once completed. HIs first tree that he had worked on over a period of three years is on display in the gallery for a couple of weeks.
A 'Save The Arts' petition has been underway regarding cuts made in funding the Arts. Art is one of Britain's greatest institutions, so if you yourself value the arts please please sign the petition at http://savethearts-uk.blogspot.com/
Also, I was once given a link to watch that to me was an absolute worth telling everyone else about. If you have a moment then it may be a good idea to to sit down and watch yourself. As well as informative it will make you smile. (The link will be below).

CAD Photographers (Nina C? Scott H?) may be interested to know FCA&C are presenting the only Scottish showing of Lanwei, an exhibition by Hong Kong based artist anothermountainman (Stanley Wong). His evocative large scale photographs of abandoned and incomplete building projects from across Asia will be at St Andrews Museum from 22 January to 6 March 2011.To accompany the exhibition a two-part masterclass will be run by acclaimed Scottish-based architectural photographer, Colin Wishart. The first session will involve a presentation of a range of images related to a theme explored in Lanwei – the relationship between people and architecture. Participants will then be set a brief to create a photograph which is their own personal response to the theme. In the second session participants will bring their resulting work for a supportive discussion around their varied approaches. The work will then be displayed in the activity space at St Andrews Museum until the conclusion of the exhibition and subsequently also be featured at FCA&C’s base in St Andrews Town Hall.
Colin Fraser Wishart is an architect in private practice as well as a respected architectural photographer. A Fellow of the Royal Incorporation of Architects in Scotland, he is also a Professional Member, and former member of council, of the Society of Scottish Artists. An Honorary Fellow of the School of Arts Culture + Environment at the University of Edinburgh, he was for many years also a part-time Teaching Fellow of Duncan of Jordanstone College, University of Dundee, where he remains Visiting Tutor in architectural photography.
His photographic work has been widely exhibited and published, and includes illustration of RIAS architectural guides to Dundee and to Fife, as well as “A Place Apart” a limited- edition artist book created in collaboration with eminent Scottish poet and writer Thomas A Clark to commemorate “Maggie’s Centre” at Ninewells Hospital, Dundee, designed by Frank Gehry. Much recent photographic work has been originated in Berlin, commencing with his collection “Reaching Into The Light” first exhibited at Dundee Contemporary Arts in 2000. His most recent series from the German capital, with a working title of “3130- 3333” is a portrayal of the serene density of American architect Peter Eisenman’s Holocaust Memorial.

December in the Abbey and Abbot House, Dunfermline
Light and sound ...
CAD have been given the opportunity to contribute to the exciting project 'Another Land'. Over four evenings in late December, Another Land is set to be a new and highly original creation in light and sound for Dunfermline Abbey. The new project, created especially for the abbey and grounds, represents the end of a journey into the distant history of Fife.
The project will conjure an extraordinary landscape within the nave of the abbey, of raw and mesmerising beauty where the distant past will seem to shatter and explode into infinity.
The production's lead artist is Tim Fitzpatrick of Red Field Arts, who was also responsible for The Pilgrim, a critically acclaimed work in light and sound, created for the abbey in 2008.

Gladstone Gallery, Edinburgh - Five4Art Exhibition
September saw Five Artist members of CAD who all got together and put together a great exhibition at The Gladstone Gallery on the Royal Mile in Edinburgh. Mary Johnston, Scott Hunter, Michelle Denholm, Corine Maxwell and Lainy Allison were the artists showing off their great art works.
ARTSPACE2LET, Edinburgh
Lainy Allison, Mary Johnston, Michelle Denholm, Sheena Johnston and Karen Howard were all invited to Edninburgh to exhibit at the Home of Craig Cross. Craig opens his house to the public for Art Exhibition events. Once a month different artists are welcomed into his home and they are allowed virtually free will to hammer picture hangers more or less where they want on his walls (very brave). About Artspace, Artspace2let is a not-for-profit organisation that arranges the exhibition of art in non-permanent gallery space in Edinburgh. Artists have the opportunity to show art publicly, to meet other artists, to gain experience of promoting art, and forge links with art dealers. Artspace2let creates opportunities for artists to gain publicity for their work. This was a two day event in September and great fun. Thanks to Craig and Fay for their support.
Adams 'U' Gallery
Below is the YouTube presentation of the 'Open Mic' that CAD had had set up in the Adams U gallery. It was used by some amazing talented people all the time it was available. Amongst those performing were the beautiful Anna Macdonald (Singer/Songwriter and Musician), Alan Forrester (S/S/M) and band member of Steamer Lane, Garry Downie who as well as being musically gifted, is also a 2d artist. CAD were pleased to have been able to have offered them this opportunity as part of the 'art'S'' mission.

Scrap Exchange Challenge - FCAC
FCA&C set the artists attending their annual Artists' & Makers' Forum a very specific challenge way back in April this year. As the Forum's theme was 'sustainability', they were asked to bring a shoebox with some of their scrap materials to swap randomly with someone else's box; then take it away and make an artwork from it. Some of their own materials could be added to it, but nothing could be bought for it.
Two and a half months later and with much creativity at work, 19 artists submitted artworks to display in St Andrews Town Hall. Some used all the contents, some even used the box itself, and certainly no two items are alike! While the challenge itself was quite hard, most agreed that it was a very stimulating exercise and theywould like to do it again!
Thanks to all who participated - Lainy Allison, Jenny Barker, Anton Beaver, Sheena Berry, Pat Bray, Hazel Darwin-Edwards, Jean Duncan, Nicola Glennie, Liz Harvey, Susie Imber, Mary Johnston, Margaret Lappin, Marianna Lines, Lynne McKellar, Evie Milo, Maureen Sangster, Dot Sim, Lorraine Smith, and Angie Turner.
