How we arrived here
CAD (Contemporary Arts Dunfermline) have been working hard to set the precedence of creativity in the town. CAD was initially born from an idea by Lainy Allison and Mary Johnston who were both very keen on improving the ‘cultural life’ in town and who have since networked with other artists to make the group become an organisation . The organisation grew and has now charitable status. CAD is now a group of artists from all sectors of the arts who are dedicated to developing, supporting, co-ordinating and promoting local cultural events and opportunities to widen and enrich the Dunfermline cultural experience, an experience that CAD feels is ‘just deserved’. This great art company has been working with various local companies in the town to provide art experiences at first hand to anyone and everyone. This year the public have seen projects such as the ‘Art in Shop Windows’ come to the town. This was set up by Fife Council as part of the Celebrate Fife 2010. CAD were pleased to have been involved with this and the artists themselves kick started the event with a trail of highly decorative mannequins placed about the town and an exhibition. Opening with a ceremony at the Glen Gates the mannequins appeared throughout the town. CAD have since been in the Kingsgate Shopping Centre exhibiting and entertaining thousands of people that have walked through their doors. Many of the visitors to the CAD gallery had admitted to never have been inside an exhibition before and expressed how much they had enjoyed the experience. CAD provided the public with art on walls, workshops, live bands and soloists, harpist, dancers and poets as well as a very successful ‘art yard’ which provided all the materials for budding artists. Their exhibition continues on until early January 2011, which has relocated to unit 59 upstairs in the shopping centre. So there is still plenty of time to take 'time out' and go along. There is also a chance to attend the CAD-DRAW mornings that are held every second Saturday, where the public can go along and participate and enjoy the chance to be creative too.
As well as providing the public with artistic/creative opportunities CAD have also helped their members too. Opportunities have been available for the artists to exhibit in the new capital of Scotland (Edinburgh, Dunfermline being the older). These have been a great success for the artists.
Like 2009, CAD are pleased to announce that they will once again team up with Dunfermline Delivers (BIDS) to provide some wonderful festive opportunities for children at the Glen Gates from October to December. Children will be able to come down and get their hands all ‘painty and glittery’ so mums and dads, CAD suggest that old clothes would be suited for these occasions. There will be plenty of chances to see CAD artists between now and December and to find out more please visit them at the Kingsgate, they would love to have a chat. CAD also welcome new members who are committed to their art and want to do something about it.
